1. I have never published a book before or worked with an illustrator. How does this work exactly?

The first step would be for us to decide on the terms and conditions of the contract. The contract is there to protect both parties and will outline details such as schedule for the artwork, cost, payment deliverable, copyrights sold, and expectations on what both parties need to respect and do during the collaboration. Once the contract has been signed, production can officially start. My process has three phases, rough concept sketches and storyboard, black and white line-art and final colour application.

2. How much will it cost for you to illustrate my book?

My fee ’s are a reflection of current industry standards, if you are not aware what they are I have included a few helpful links at the end of this Q/A. That being said, depending on the size of the project, amount of research needed, and edits required following completion (if any), the cost could be anywhere between $7 500 - $16 000.

For me to provide the most accurate quote, please answer the following:

• What is the total number of illustrations you require?
• What types of illustrations ( vignettes, quarter page, half pages, full pages, double page spreads) do you require? And how many of each type of illustration?
• Will the illustrations be in full colour or black and white?
• Will their be an additional illustration needed for the cover page? If so, will it be a wrap around cover?

3. Do you charge by the page, or by the hour?

Neither. I expect a flat fee.

4. How does it work for payments?

I ask for a 40% deposit at contract signing, 30% deposit after initial sketches have been approved, and the final 30% after all final artwork has been delivered. The number of payment instalments can be negotiated if needed.

An online payment method is preferred (i.e. Paypal or Interact email transfer)

5. Can you do the graphic design/book layout as well?

I have no experience in book formatting or layout. Therefore, I would rather leave this to an
experienced designer so that your book is created with only the best quality in mind. Hiring an
designer with publishing experience will increase the overall cost of your project but will
help you produce a professional looking product.

6. How long of a turnaround time can I expect for completion of the illustrations?

The time frame will depend on the size of the project, subject matter, degree of detail, and research
needed. However, based on my experience, 3-7 months has been the typical time frame. The time may
increase if the client asks for additional edits after completion.

7. What happens if I can no longer go forward with the project?

No Problem, life happens. If cancelled, once production has started, I ask for a kill fee proportionate to the work that has been done at the time of cancellation.

8. How will I receive the final artwork?

I send the client all final artwork in high resolution PDF format either by e-mail or Wetransfer
depending on final file size. If the original working file is wanted, an additional fee will be charged (to be
discussed in contract terms).

9. Can I request additional edits after I have received all artwork?

Of course! However, since all artwork would have been previously approved and completed by this
stage, an additional hourly fee will be charged. Time frame for the additional edits will depend on my
workload capacity at the time of request.
